Our New Campaign:
Brainstorm and Potluck

January 22, 2016
Save the Date!

Keep January 22 open for a potluck and laid back brainstorming meeting about what’s next for GOAL. Be thinking about what matters to you regarding sustainability, local foods, local commerce, and family farms.
This will be fun and relaxed and food will be involved. (We’ll try to get a place with adult beverages as well.) More info coming soon!

Volunteer Opportunity:
Feeding SD Seniors

Dec 1, 5:30pm
Feeding SD Building

We have an opportunity to help feed members of our community by volunteering at Feeding South Dakota.Join us on Tuesday Dec 1 at 5:30pm at the Feeding South Dakota building to help fill food boxes for senior citizens.

Please wear close toed shoes. We love kids but the regs only allow grownups to help. We need you for a full two hour commitment but we promise you will leave there feeling good about yourself and the work you did.

Chicken Ordinance Update

At our last meeting on November 6th, we decided as a chapter to put moving a revised chicken ordinance forward on the back burner. We had met with all the Commission members and walked them through the updates. Despite revising the ordinance so it both allows people to keep chickens and protects neighbors’ property rights, we could not get a Commissioner to give us first reading.

Putting an ordinance on the backburner does not mean we are done, only that we are letting it simmer. Brookings and Vermillion will be bringing forward ordinances that are likely to get adopted. The ground situation wil change. Eventually, we WILL have chickens in Pierre.

Until then, we will continue to work for local, sustainable solutions for food, energy, farming and community well being. Join us! Your voice matters. Local action. Community strong.

Leadership Team Nominations

We will vote on our Leadership Team at our next member meeting, scheduled for early February. If you would like to nominate yourself or anyone else, please contact me (Anne) at

GOAL Member Support

FYI, GOAL Member Deb Haka (the purveyor of goat products and eggs at the Country Farmer’s Market) is facing some tough health challenges right now.  Please keep her and her family in your thoughts, especially during this holiday season. And if you are so inclined, you can help out as there is a Go Fund Me campaign.
